Obituary for William P. "Bill" Wenzel

William P. "Bill" Wenzel, 72, of Horton Lane, a lifelong resident of Port Ewen, passed away peacefully at home on Thursday evening, December 6, 2018, while in the comforting presence of his loving family.

Bill was born in Kingston, NY on November 11, 1946, a son of the late Richard and Matilda (Sisovsky) Wenzel.

He was a graduate of Kingston High School class of 1965 and then earned his associates degree in Business/Accounting from Ulster County Community College. Bill was self-employed for over 40 years in the family business Wenzel Brothers Amusements and Vending in Port Ewen.

Devoted to his Catholic faith, Bill was a former treasurer at Coleman Catholic High School and a former CCD instructor at Church of the Presentation of the BVM in Port Ewen. Bill was very active in volunteering at both Kingston Catholic School and Coleman during his children's schooling.

A member of Ulster County Bassmasters and life-member of the National Rifle Association, Bill enjoyed hunting and especially fishing. "Bassmaster Bill" frequented many local fishing spots (one of his favorites was the Wallkill) and he frequently participated in local and statewide fishing tournaments. Bill had been known to take home a trophy or two in his time.

Bill was devoted to his wife and three children, and providing for them was always his first priority. He enjoyed spending as much time with his family as he could, and he would often reminisce about the many family trips to Disney World and local daytrips across New York State. Bill and his family used to spend a lot of time at the "Sub Shop" in Port Ewen, his sister Barbara's business, a popular place to eat and hang out at the time.

In recent years Bill decreased his work load and enjoyed taking road trips to casinos and going to OTB to bet on the horses. On any given day, he could also be found shooting the breeze at Chic's in uptown Kingston, one of his favorite local hangouts. Bill was also fond of Fox News and was never shy about voicing his opinion about politics.

Bill is survived by his wife of 48 years, Terri (Copeman) Wenzel, two daughters, Joleen and her husband Chris of Richfield Springs, NY and Michelle and her husband Keith of Pasco, WA, one son Michael and his wife Sara of Radcliff, KY, four grandchildren, Ethan, Aidan, Grace, and Julian, four brothers, Richard, Robert, Zeke, and George Wenzel, one sister Elizabeth Dunne, many nieces and nephews, and his dear friend Ronnie of Catskill, NY.

He is predeceased by siblings Barbara Lamb, Peter Wenzel, and Jean Bell.

The family has entrusted the Gilpatric-VanVliet Funeral Home, 339 Broadway, Ulster Park, Town of Esopus, with the care and cremation service arrangements for Bill.

Cremation held at Wiltwyck Crematory. There are no calling hours.

The memorial mass will begin at 11:00 am, Wednesday, December 12, 2018, at The Church of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, 209 Hoyt St, Port Ewen.

In lieu of flowers Bill would want friends and family to visit a local OTB and place a bet on a horse in his name.
