Michael Robert Ryan, 71, formerly of Kingston, NY, died on Wednesday, December16, 2020 at Hudson Valley Rehabilitation and Extended Care, Highland NY following a long illness.
He was born in McKeesport, PA on May 10th, 1949, a son of the late Leonard and Harriet (Larsen) Ryan.
Michael grew up in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, and graduated from Brooklyn Tech High School in 1968. He spent most summers at Coney Island and worked as a lifeguard at a private pool there.
A Lance Corporal in the US Marine Corps, he served in Quartermaster Supply in Camp Lejeune during the Vietnam War. Afterwards he was employed as a Trouble Shooting Dispatcher for New York Telephone for over 25 years. In later years he worked as an office manager for a healthcare organization.
Michael moved from Queens, New York to Kingston several years ago in order to be closer to his family. He made friends wherever he went and will be remembered for his quick wit and sarcastic humor.
He is survived by a brother, Patrick Ryan, and his wife, Margaret, a nephew, Christopher Ryan, two nieces, Caren Sullivan and Eileen Goble, as well as his grandnephews, Elijah, Zane and Calen and grandniece, Huxley.
Michael enjoyed reading, watching classic movies and visiting with his family. He always maintained a cheerful disposition even after the loss of both legs to peripheral artery disease.
The family has entrusted the Gilpatric-VanVliet Funeral Home, 339 Broadway, Ulster Park, Town of Esopus with the care and cremation arrangements for Michael.
