Obituary for Karl F. Gerteis

Karl Fredrick Gerteis, 83, of Poughkeepsie, NY died Thursday morning, February 27th, 2020 at The Pines at Poughkeepsie Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation.

He was born in Fargo, North Dakota on September 8th, 1936, the son of the late Karl and Helen (Muhs) Gerteis.

Karl's family moved to Syracuse NY in 1939 however, and Syracuse remained his home through his undergraduate college years. He earned his BA degree at Syracuse University and then in later years, a Master of Science degree in Education, with an emphasis in Psychology, from Elmira College. Following his undergraduate work, he served in the US Army for 2 years.

He began his career as a social worker in Syracuse in early 1961. In 1962 he took his first position with the NY State Department of Correctional Services as a Guidance Counselor at the Monterey Correctional facility, and retired 37 years later (1999) as a Senior Corrections Counselor in the Fishkill Facility.

In his retirement years Karl enjoyed walking the beautiful trails in the Poughkeepsie area, photography, and occasional visits with his sisters in the western United States.

Karl is survived by a daughter, Courtney Gerteis of Houston, PA, and his two sisters, Joan Gerteis of Langley, WA and Katharine Fusco of Las Cruces, NM.

The family has entrusted the Gilpatric-VanVliet Funeral Home, 339 Broadway, Ulster Park, Town of Esopus, with the care and cremation arrangements for Karl.

Cremation held at Wiltwyck Crematory.

There are no services planned.

Dear Courtney and Cece,
We are saddened to hear about the passing of your father and husband. He was a very nice and kind neighbor and my parents enjoyed being their neighbor in Scenic Acres in Poughkeepsie, NY. I hope Karl looks for my dad in heaven as the two of them could have a nice visit and talk about the good old days.
