Obituary for Jan Van Heusen

Jan Van Heusen
Jan Lloyd Van Heusen, 74, of Salem Street, Port Ewen, passed away at home while in the comforting presence of his family on Tuesday, July 11, 2017.

He was born in Norwalk, CT on February 21, 1943, a son of the late Leon Irving and F. Vyra (Green) Van Heusen.

Jan served over 30 years in the U.S. armed forces, beginning in 1964 with the U.S. Air Force.

Throughout his life, he was employed with various local businesses, including as a merchandiser for Colony Liquor in Kingston, and as a chef at both The Capri 400 and La Mirage Restaurants in Port Ewen. He was an associate of Glen F. Kubista & Associates in Port Ewen, and most recently a retail sales clerk at The Port Ewen Liquor Store, where he was affectionately well-known as “Mister I.D.”

An avid NY Yankees fan, he loved to cook and bake, and enjoyed reading, especially mystery novels. Above all, he adored his two grandchildren, Andrew and Emily Van Heusen.

He is survived by his wife, Kiyoko (Wakiyama) Van Heusen, one son, Jay Van Heusen, and his wife Sayaka, of Bronxville, NY, one sister, Carole Martin, and her husband Jeff, and one brother, Alan Van Heusen, and his wife Roxanne, all of Seneca, S.C. Many nieces, nephews and cousins also survive.

He is predeceased by a sister, Elaine Blodgett and a brother, Leon I. “Buddy” Van Heusen.

The family has entrusted the staff of the Gilpatric-VanVliet Funeral Home, 339 Broadway, Ulster Park, Town of Esopus, with the care and cremation service arrangements for Jan. Cremation was held at Wiltwyck Crematory.

Jan’s family will receive friends at the funeral home during a memorial visitation period on Saturday, from 2 pm to 5 pm, during which a memorial service, conducted by the Rev. Dr. David M. Brechter, will be held at 3 pm.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Jan's memory to: Hudson Valley Hospice, 400 Aaron Court, Kingston, NY 12401
